School Program

Camino de Paz School is a unique environment for adolescents providing a wealth of experiences and challenges in and out of the classroom. Classes in math, science, social studies, history, literature, language arts, music, Spanish and art are held regularly. Computer skills are developed as part and parcel of the students' research projects, business and publishing.

In addition, students care for animals, prepare meals, process foods and help on the farm. They run a poultry business, selling their eggs at the Camino de Paz Farm booth in local farmers' markets. They construct and maintain animal habitats and their own garden plots.

Camping, backpacking and hiking are other extensions of the classroom into the natural world. For at least one week each year, students apprentice at local businesses and non-profit organizations.

In class meetings, students establish their own guidelines for behavior and participation. They learn to problem solve, to listen, to express their ideas and to help and support each other.
Adults of varied ages and backgrounds interact with the students as guides and mentors. Some of these are visiting instructors who share their expertise in a particular field, including: weaving, pottery, woodworking, story telling, painting, welding, electronics, cooking, horsemanship, computer science and many more. Most of these are full or part-time staff at the school, including members of the farm staff.

Through these activities young adults become exposed to a variety of tasks, roles and responsibilities. They explore what unique contributions they have to offer the community and the world at large. They are called upon to embody their highest Self.
